Lithuanian Minister of Transport and Communications, Juras Taminskas, is making his first visit to Riga, where he will meet Latvia’s Minister of Transport, Atis Švinka, and Estonia’s Minister of Infrastructure, Kuldar Leis. The annual Baltic Transport Ministers’ meeting will focus on Rail Baltica progress and the financing of joint transport and military mobility projects.
Lukas Paškevičius, the Minister’s representative, highlights that this is the Minister of Transport’s first official visit abroad.
“The visit will provide an opportunity to meet Baltic colleagues and discuss key infrastructure priorities. The ministers will review progress on Rail Baltica and Via Baltica and consider options for increased EU funding. They will also address the risks posed by geopolitical tensions and cyberattacks, stressing the need for stronger coordination and additional resources to protect and strengthen transport infrastructure resilience,” the Minister’s representative noted.
During his visit to Riga, Minister Taminskas will also participate in the 44th Session of the Baltic Assembly and the 31st Session of the Baltic Council. He will emphasise the importance of transport cooperation among the Baltic States in the discussion: Transport connectivity as a pillar of regional unity, economic development and security guarantee in the Baltic States.
In Lithuania, construction works on the strategically important Rail Baltica project have already been extended to 114 km between Kaunas and Panevėžys. In the section from the Polish border to Jiesia (Kaunas), territorial planning is complete, European-gauge design works are in progress, and land is being acquired.
The Baltic States are aiming for greater EU investment for transport projects that would accelerate the region’s integration into the European transport network andstrengthen military mobility links with the rest of Europe. Delivering the Rail Baltica project by 2030 will require an additional €10 billion for the Baltic States, including €4 billion for Lithuania.
The Transport Ministers of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have agreed to jointly seek additional EU funding for the Rail Baltica project. This commitment was affirmed in a joint statement signed by the three ministers in Vilnius in May.
